Life Cycle Assessment

Australian Eco-Indicator Project

8th August 2003

Abstract

Project proposal for an Australian Eco-Indicator Project - A project to develop an environmental impact assessment methodology for Australia.

Currently in Australia, there is only limited development of methods for quantifying the most relevant environmental impacts and there is no thorough methodology available to compare these impacts. The Centre for Design has developed this proposal for the establishment of a project to develop a single indicator model for use in LCA in Australia, using the Eco-Indicator 99 model as an initial framework.

To develop a comprehensive, transparent, damage oriented life cycle impact assessment model for use in Australia, with a view to:

  • increase the useability and relevance of LCA in Australia, particularly for designers, policy makers, and other non-expert users of LCA results;
  • make clear linkages between the consumption of products and services and the most important environmental impacts facing Australia.

LCIA workshop

Following the 5th International conference on LCA in Melbourne in late November a two day workshop will be held at RMIT on Damage based ecoindicator modelling. The aim of the workshop is to bring scientists from different disciplines in contact with LCIA need and requirements and to share with them the value of the LCIA approach. From this it is hoped that a consensus on what is required to forward LCIA will emerge along with a work program and potential funding sources for such a program.

The workshop will run all day on November 27th and 28th 2006.
